Firefighters in Gardiner, Montana continued to work through the day yesterday to extinguish hot spots from a fire that destroyed at four businesses and seriously damaged at least one other on the town’s main street Tuesday. Some of those businesses had residences upstairs as well. Investigators are trying to pin down the exact cause of the conflagration, but witnesses say it apparently began in the kitchen of one of the businesses. Firefighters responded from Gardiner Gateway Hose Company, Paradise Valley, Park County Montana, and Yellowstone National Park. Businesses destroyed included the Two Bit Saloon, Rosie’s Pizza & Bistro, Red’s Blue Goose Saloon and the Yellowstone Raft Company. Park County Sheriff Brad Bichler says, “It is very difficult to see the loss and destruction that has taken place. However, to watch this community rally around each other and do whatever it takes to overcome this tragedy is something to behold.” Many residents and businesses including Xanterra in Yellowstone and other area hotels have donated money, food and personal supplies to aid those made homeless by the fire. Bichler says it is likely the intersection at Main and Second which is on the main route through town will likely be closed for some time.
