Landslide!

April 29, 2011 Greater Yellowstone No Comments
road-closed

A landslide on the southern bank of Palisades Reservoir near the dam, along Forest Road 76, has moved significantly leading to the temporary closure of the road.  Caribou-Targhee National Forest Supervisor, Brent Larson signed a closure order for the road and immediate slide area on April 27th.  Access is not allowed from the Palisades Dam to Calamity Junction or surrounding area of the slide due to falling trees and high escarpments.  Meanwhile, the South Snake River Road still provides access to the Calamity Area while the portion of the Snake River/Calamity Road over the Palisades Dam still provides key public access to summer homes, campgrounds, trailheads, and boat ramps.  The campground and boat ramp, however are closed to vehicles with trailers due to a lack of space to make the turn at Calamity Junction.
