Positive Developments at the Landslide

Landslide

There have been positive developments at the landslide in the Snake River Canyon over the weekend.  WYDOT officials say the side berms of the moving slide continue to be stable, allowing for excavation of the mud from Highway 26-89 to continue on both sides of the slide. District 3 District Engineer John Eddins says water flow in the middle of the slide has increased which has moved a lot of debris down to the road.  Meanwhile, the material in the lower moving section of the slide is now moving at a rate of about one foot per minute. Previously, that area was moving about six feet per hour.   Says Eddins, “You can’t walk across the slide anymore because of how fast it’s moving now — it looks like a really slow moving river of mud.” That, he says, is good news because the large mass is breaking up and coming down with the moving material.  In another positive development, WYDOT crews are seeing more stability at the top of the slide, which hasn’t moved for two days.  US Highway 26-89 now enters its second week of closure due to the slide, and although Eddins could not estimate when it might be reopened, he assures WYDOT crews are working to reopen the road as fast as possible.

  • Let the Christmas hints begin - November 28, 2014
My little sprouts are already getting ramped up for Christmas. They still don’t quite have the whole idea of the Christmas season, but they’re definitely into the presents. I was a little fella once, and I remember counting down the days until December 25th. There were no visions of sugarplums, but pocket knives, snowshoes, shotguns […]
  • Happy Thanksgiving, Wyoming! - November 27, 2014
I know, a show about giving thanks on Thanksgiving is pretty predictable. But it doesn’t feel right to overlook the importance of this day. However, because this is a program about the outdoors, I’ll just talk about the things in the outdoors I’m thankful for. There’s plenty of it. Especially here in Wyoming. We’ve got […]
  • Pelts are nearing prime conditions - November 26, 2014
The days are getting shorter and the nights are getting longer. It’s the amount of daylight, and not the temperature, that causes wild animals to grow longer, thicker coats. If you’re a predator hunter or a trapper, that’s your cue. The pelts are coming into their prime right now, but that doesn’t mean they’re at […]
  • Very Windy in Many Areas, Developing Light to Moderate Snow - November 25, 2014
The I-25 and I-80 corridors and adjacent roads throughout central, eastern and southern Wyoming will see very strong and gusty winds today.  Sustained winds of 25 to 40 mph likely for many areas with gusts to 60 mph or higher in the wind prone locations. Light to moderate snow shower activity will also be increasing […]
