Road Damage May Prove A Blessing

US-26-89-slide-cleanup-5-24-175x175

Removal of debris from the landslide across US Highway 26/89 in the Snake River Canyon has revealed that the slide has cut a trench about 30-feet wide and seven feet deep across the highway.  However, District Engineer John Eddins say WYDOT will be able to take advantage of the trench to install a drainage pipe under the highway to help handle the water expected to continue to flow down the ridge after the highway is reopened.  Eddins told Jackson Hole Radio News, “that was the location we had planned to put a large metal culvert pipe anyhow.”  Eddins goes on, “Mother Nature performed some work we were going to have to do anyhow.”  Eddins says the large mass of slide material still poised above the road moved only about 15 feet Tuesday, and crews tried diverting some of the water draining down the ridge into that mass in order to get it to come down and cross the road. Eddins said he is optimistic about the progress contractor Yellow Iron is making in the debris cleanup.  In fact, Eddins says, “we’re hopeful that if everything goes well we could have a lane through there Friday Night.”
