Flag Day Today
Today is Flag Day, celebrated on June 14th each year. It was officially set in 1916 by a proclamation from President Woodrow Wilson and affirmed by an act of Congress in 1949. The day supposedly commemorates the adoption of the flag of the United States, which happened that day by resolution of the Second Continental Congress in 1777 – and whether or not that first flag was actually created by a Philadelphia Seamstress named Betsy Ross continues to be debated by historians. None-the-less, the day provides an opportunity for Americans to show their patriotism by again trotting out the Stars and Stripes and displaying in front of their homes or businesses.
