Ultralight Pilot Rescued After Crash
Search and Rescue personnel from both Teton County, Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park joined forces to evacuate an injured pilot from where his experimental aircraft crashed near Spearhead Peak near the summit of Fox Creek Pass. Tim Ciocarlan of Teton County Search and Rescue says 57-year-old James Mauch of Louisville, Kentucky reported the crash by means of his personal locator beacon about 7:00 pm. Ciocarlan says Mauch then walked to a clearing about a quarter mile west of the crash site to await help. County rescuers coordinated with park rangers who flew in the interagency helicopter to the scene. Mauch was taken to Jackson Hole Airport and transported by park ambulance to St. John’s Medical Center for treatment of an arm injury. Ciocarlan says the rescue was a combined one since it was uncertain if the crash was within Grand Teton National Park or across the boundary in the Jedediah Smith Wilderness.
