Sheep Shift Spawns Surplus
Biologists at the National Elk Refuge last week reported that an unusually high number of bighorn sheep had been counted on Miller Butte. According to the January 24th biological update, 98 sheep were counted on the butte. However, Refuge Biologist Eric Cole notes that the large number does not necessarily mean the population is increasing, but may simply be the result of the sheep that normally use the Curtis Canyon and upper Flat Creek area shifting into the lower area. Cole says the Wyoming Game and Fish Department has begun a study to determine more about the movement patterns and habitat use of the sheep.
