The latest count of elk on the National Elk Refuge is up from last month, now numbering 7,360 in the herd. That, says Refuge Biologist Eric Cole compares with 7,746 last year at this time, and an average of 7,322. A count of the elk that are on surrounding native winter ranges is to be conducted sometime next week. Cole says the bison count, meanwhile, turned up 759 that were on feed – 124 fewer than the same time last year. Currently, the elk and bison on the refuge are in a full feeding schedule.
