Fatal Avalanche At Cooke City

Miller avalanche

An avalanche triggered by a group of seven snowmobilers near Cooke City, Montana claimed the life of one and partially buried two others.  According to the Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, the slide occurred around 12:30 pm Wednesday as the victim turned his sled around at the edge of Miller Road near Daisy Pass.  Forest officials say the man was not on a steep slope, nor was the avalanche path obvious.  According to an investigation by the Park County, Montana Sheriff’s office, the men’s companions immediately went to the aid of the three who had been buried and dug them out.  The report says the man who died was immediately given CPR, but it failed to revive him.  The two other buried riders were transported by a Yellowstone National Park ambulance to Livingston Memorial Hospital for evaluation and treatment.  So far, the snowmobilers involved are only identified as being from Saskatchewan Canada.

  • My new used truck may be the death of me - October 23, 2014
Not long ago, I brought home a 1994 Ford F-250. It’s not much to look at, but it’s even worse to drive. About the only things it has going for it are that it’s mechanically sound, and it’s technically a vehicle. I’ve named it Clunk, for good reason. When you shift it into either drive […]
  • Quiet, Seasonal Weather Expected Today - October 22, 2014
High pressure will build over the state of Wyoming today, which will keep skies sunny to mostly sunny and conditions mainly dry.  Winds, however, could be strong and gusty today, especially throughout central and southeastern portions of the state.  Parts of I-80 (Cheyenne to Rawlins) and I-25 (Colorado state line to Casper) could see winds […]
  • Estimating range on waterfowl is easy - October 22, 2014
If you’ve done any goose hunting, you’ve probably heard the term “skybusting.” You may know it means shooting at birds that are out of your shotgun’s effective range, but do you know if you’re guilty of it? You can set up your decoys to minimize the risk of shooting at birds when they’re too far […]
  • Don’t lose your vision in the woods - October 21, 2014
I don’t have good eyes. Had I been born a hundred years ago, there would have been no help for me. Glasses can’t help me, so I’d have blind. I have to wear a special kind of contact lens, which wasn’t available in the days of Davey Crockett and Daniel Boone. But through the miracle […]
