Legislature Eyes 80 mph

I-80

How fast do you drive when you are travling I-80 or I-90 in Wyoming?  The Wyoming House has passed a bill – which now moves on to the Senate – that would allow the speed on portions of the state’s interstate highways to be raised to 80 miles per hour.  Just where these speeds would apply, says Teton County Representative Keith Gingery, would be up to the Superintendent of Highways.  Gingery says past bills have been a blanket order to raise the speed limit on all interstate highway.  Instead, this bill gives the authority to the Superintendent to determine which stretches of the highway could go to 80, based on road design and location; but not the entire highway.  Gingery explains that parts of the interstate are simply not suited for such high speeds, like the segment over Elk Mountain.  The key to this bill’s success, he says, was its discretionary nature.
