It is that time of year again when Wyoming residents enjoying outdoor activities may pick up some nasty hitch-hikers: ticks. The Wyoming Department of Health points out that diseases often transmitted by infected ticks include tularemia, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever and Colorado Tick Fever. Ticks are typically found in bushy or grassy areas, or can be passed along to you by your pets. The Department of Health recommends wearing light-colored clothing to enable you to more easily spot ticks crawling on it, tucking pant-legs into socks, applying repellents containing 20% or more DEET, and checking for ticks upon returning home. Last year, the state agency says, Wyoming saw nine Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever cases and one tularemia case.
