Permit Amended For Elkfest

The Jackson town council Monday approved an addendum to the special event permit for Elkfest activities to allow participants to carry poster-sized birthday cards as part of the 100th anniversary of the National Elk Refuge.  Elkfest, which annually takes place on and adjacent the town square, takes place this year on May 19th.  At the same town council meeting, however, the town council failed to permit the placement of four tables inside each of the four entrances to the square from which Operation Save America could distribute pro-life literature, bibles, and gospel tracts.  Mayor Mark Barron says council also did not take action on a request of the group to use amplified sound on the square.  Barron says town council was very clear to the representatives of Operation Save America that there are other venues in the town for their demonstrations, but they continue to be specifically interested in being on hand for the activities at the square as is their free speech right.
