Montana Evaluates Fire Danger

Schweitzer

The annual fire season briefing for Montana was delivered to Governor Brian Schweitzer yesterday including presentations from the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation, the Northern Rockies Coordination Center and a variety of other state and federal agencies.  Schweitzer says the state has already seen fire on more than 30-thousand acres and the hot, dry weather in Montana this month has also elevated the fire risk in some areas unusually high.  Schweitzer says early season predictions about the fire season in Montana and throughout the Northern Rockies geographic area don’t point to an extreme season, but even in an “average” season, fire crews for the Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation will respond to 350 wildfires.  Schweitzer says the state this year will add the social media site “Twitter” to the methods it uses to get their fire information out to the public in a timely manner.

The rabbit populations in the state are going crazy. I have a degree in zoology, so I feel I’m qualified to estimate the number of cottontails hopping around Wyoming. My best estimate is zillions. OK, so maybe my methods for determining the rabbit numbers aren’t exactly scientific. But there are a lot of ‘em. There […]

A cold front and weather system will push through the state of Wyoming early today.  Scattered rain showers will be possible statewide across lower elevations, but the best chance will be in northern and southeastern Wyoming.  Rain showers could become heavy at times, especially in southeastern parts of the state in the afternoon and evening.  […]
  • Today’s a big day for hunters in Wyoming - October 1, 2014
If you’re really serious about hunting, you’re probably not listening to this. Depending on where you are in the state, the sun’s either up already or sunrise isn’t far away. If you’re a die-hard hunter, you’re probably already hunkered down in a field waiting for the geese to come in, out in the timber trying […]
  • Not all bad news in judge’s decision to relist wolves - September 30, 2014
U.S. District Judge Amy Berman Jackson handed down a ruling last week that removed wolves from Wyoming control and put them back under the protection of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. That ruling put an end to hunting wolves anywhere in the state, whether they’re in the trophy game area in the northwestern corner […]
