Exporting The Wyoming Way
Wyoming’s US Senators Mike Enzi and John Barrasso have taken a page directly from the Wyoming legislature handbook and reintroduced a bill which would require each piece of legislation considered by the Senate be confined to a single issue – the same method the Wyoming legislature uses. Enzi points to Wyoming as being recognized for the best run state government in the country while Barrasso says the state’s single topic bill rule is only one example of what makes it so. Authored by Enzi, the bill would enact a standing order that creates a point of order against a bill or resolution that is not confined to a single issue. Representative David Schweikert of Arizona has sponsored a similar bill in the House and defends the concept saying that every bill voted on in the US Congress should be considered on its own merit.
