Macker to Attend Summit for Young Elected Leaders

This weekend Teton County Commissioner Natalia D. Macker will meet with fellow elected officials and national leaders in Chicago at the 11th annual National Convening of the Young Elected Officials Network. At the convening, which is the largest gathering of young elected leaders in the country, Commissioner Macker will participate in issue-based training sessions and share best practices with nearly 150 fellow progressive elected officials from across the nation.

Macker, 32, was appointed to the Teton County Board of County Commissioners in August 2015 and has been a member of the Young Elected Officials Network since that time. She recently launched her campaign for re-election.

“I am honored to attend the Convening and connect with elected leaders from around the country. We live in an isolated, rural county and through the convening I will build connections with other rural counties, discuss shared challenges, and bring back opportunities to Teton County. Of particular interest to me are the sessions on affordable housing and community communications.”

The Young Elected Officials (YEO) Network, a project of People For the American Way Foundation, is the first and only national initiative to provide a network of support to the newest generation of progressive leaders at every level of elected office. Over the last decade, the YEO Network has grown to more than 1,000 members in every state and at every level of office.

“We are proud to come to Chicago to honor the work our members are doing in their communities,” said Andrew Gillum, director of youth leadership programs at People For the American Way Foundation. “This city has contributed so much to social advocacy movements and community organizing. That makes it a natural fit for us to bring YEOs together with leaders from the progressive movement working through varied channels to change their communities for the better. In this transformational year for our country, the time is now to advocate for forward-thinking solutions to the challenges we face. Our members are stepping up to answer that call to service.”
