College to Host 3rd Annual Wyoming Snow and Avalanche Workshop (WYSAW) in
Jackson, Wyoming.
Teton County Search & Rescue Foundation, Backcountry Zero and
Central Wyoming College have announced the 3rd annual WYSAW to be held on
Saturday, October 28th, 2017 at the Center for the Arts in Jackson, Wyoming. The
workshop will run from 8:30am – 5:00pm and features an excellent line-up of speakers
and 2 panel discussions. Doors will open at 8:15am for the event and attendees are
encouraged to arrive early.
“We are excited to host WYSAW for a third time for our community and the region,”
said Stephanie Thomas, Executive Director of TCSARF. “We feel it’s crucial to offer
opportunities for the community to build their skills and learn about backcountry safety.
Our local guides, outfitters, instructors, and backcountry users at-large have a wealth
of knowledge and we’re excited to build upon that. At the end of the day, it’s
incumbent upon all of us as backcountry users to make a habit of learning, practicing
our backcountry skills and striving to reduce risk wherever we can.”
The event will include a keynote by Knox Williams on trends in avalanche accidents
with a focus on the Teton region. Other prominent speakers include Lisa Van Sciver,
Simon Trautman, Liam Bailey and local mountaineer Mark Newcomb. This year’s event
will also include 2 speakers and a panel discussion on youth in the backcountry.
In addition to the educational speakers, approximately 20 backcountry equipment
vendors, industry pros, retailers and guides will be on hand to discuss the latest in
backcountry technology and offer opportunities for further training.
An after-party will be hosted at the Snake River Brewery from 5:30-7:00pm. WYSAW
attendees will receive free beer and apps while they last.
WYSAW is open to the public. Entry is $40 and includes a swag bag from sponsors,
coffee and snacks, lunch from Pica’s, access to all presentations and entrance to the
after-party. Students age 18 and under can attend the workshop for free. Please
