Senate File 49, the bill granting private schools the same exemptions from county zoning as public schools passed the Senate yesterday on a vote of 23 to 6 with one Senator abstaining. Senate File 49, seeks to change how counties treat zoning for private schools. Before passing out to the Senate Floor last week, Senator Chris Rothfuss of Laramie sought and won an amendment stating that rather than offering private schools complete freedom, the law would instead subject them to the same rules currently regulating public and charter school facilities. That, and one other amendment stating that the school must meetor exceed the school facility commission guidelines for education buildings and siting requirements, were the only amendments attached to the original bill. The legislation now moves to the House for concurrence there, but as yet, now date for its first reading there has been slated.
