Teton Valley School Mascot Controversy Brews

by Jackson Hole Radio News

Five years after the question of the appropriateness of the Teton High School mascot – the Redskins – was discussed with no resolution, the question has again been raised during a public comment at the March 11th board meeting, and will be formally discussed in July. Victor resident Stephanie Crockett told the school board shefears that not only does the mascot not teach students respect for other cultures, but it can cast a shadow over a student’s future.

School Board Chairman Chris Isaacson says given what happened five years ago when a mascot change was discussed, the reconsideration needs to be done when a larger venue can be arranged for the school board meeting. In 2013, the public filled the THS auditorium for debate over the mascot change. Consequently, the district is planning to place the issue on the agenda for discussion in its July school board meeting which will again be held at the high school auditorium.
