Not So Shaky In Yellowstone

January was a seismically quiet month in Yellowstone National Park. Mike Poland, who heads up the park’s volcano observatory, reports there was not a lot of seismicity in terms of earth tremors or deformation of the land, and even Steamboat Geyser which has been erupting more frequently over the past year and a half was quieter through the month. “During the month of January, it had two water eruptions; one on January 9th and the other on January 23rd. We had one more that occurred very late on February 1st; so three eruptions so far in 2020 – two in January and one so far at the very beginning of February.”, he said.

Poland says only 41 earthquakes were recorded during the month – none above 3 on the Richter scale – and there was no swarm activity. All of that, he says is below average for the park. Still, there are no conclusions that can be drawn from this quieter activity.
