Grizzly Attack Near Big Sky

by Jackson Hole Radio News

A hunter was attacked by a female grizzly bear Monday morning near Big Sky Montana. The 69-year-old man suspects he had gotten too close to a kill site near Flattop Mountain where a friend had harvested an animal a couple of days ago. A sow with cubs attacked him about 7:00 am. Gallatin County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue, Big Sky Fire, Montana Highway Patrol, and Yellowstone Club Security were able to drive an ambulance to near the attack site and walk the man out to the ambulance, which transported him to the Big Sky Medical Center. The victim’s condition is stable with serious bite marks on his shoulder and hip, according to Gallatin County Sheriff Brian Gootkin. Gootkin reminds hunters and hikers that bears more actively search for food in the fall and can be protective of their food sources.
