Arrest Warrant Scam Afoot

by Jackson Hole Radio News

The Teton County Sheriff’s Office is alerting the public about an arrest warrant scam being made by phone.

During the calls, scammers attempt to collect a fine in lieu of an arrest due to a claim of failing to report for jury duty, or some other offense. They urge the victims to purchase a prepaid debit card such as a Green Dot card or gift card to satisfy the fine.

In some cases, the scammers provide names of factual law enforcement officers they have found online or present bogus badge numbers. Often, the phone numbers on caller ID’s have been spoofed to appear as if they are actually from a law enforcement agency.

The Sheriff’s Department stresses residents should never respond to a claim that an arrest warrant can be made to go away by sending money, and never give a caller personal information. Instead, hang up and either contact the sheriff’s office or go to the website, http://www.tetonsheriff.org .
