Skier Killed in Avalanche

Grand Teton National Park rangers aided by the Teton County Search and Rescue Helicopter responded to the report of a skier who had been caught in an avalanche in the “Broken Thumb Couloir” on north side of 25-Short west of Taggart Lake.

The report of the avalanche came in at 12:00 pm and rescuers immediately responded. While further information about the incident was not immediately available, Park Spokesperson Denise Germann says the avalanche resulted in a fatality.

Teton County Coroner Dr. Brent Blue identified the deceased as 33-year-old Matthew Brien who had moved to Jackson from Pennsylvania. Avalanche danger in the area of the incident was rated “considerable.” Brien is the third person to die in an avalanche in the Jackson Hole area in a week.
