Yellowstone warns visitors to avoid horny elk

//

Yellowstone National Park is warning visitors the bull elk population is starting to get amorous with the onset of the fall season. This is when the elk mating season begins each year.

The Park advises that bull elk can be unpredictable and dangerous during this time. People have been severely injured by elk under these circumstances. Elk may run quickly without warning and may change direction suddenly.

The bulls have even been known to charge and damage vehicles driving through the Mammoth area. If an elk does charge, the park advises find shelter in your vehicle or behind a tall, sturdy barrier as quickly as possible. Be watchful when exiting a building or rounding a blind corner that there are not elk close by.

Of course, at all times, maintain a distance of at least 25 yards equivalent to two bus lengths from any elk – and stay particularly alert this time of year.
