FBI Investigators have found what they are calling “what appears to be human remains” near some belongings of the primary person of interest in the slaying of 22-year-old Gabriella Petito near Moran last month. The FBI announced searchers found the remains in a Florida nature preserve near a backpack and a notebook believed to belong to Brian Laundrie. The remains have not yet been identified.
CBS reported last night the suspected human remains were found in an area previously underwater. Law enforcement sources told CBS that it will take some time to positively identify the suspected human remains since only “a small part” of a body has been found, complicating the identification efforts.
A law enforcement source also said that a backpack has been recovered, although it is not clear who the backpack belongs to. Laundrie has not been charged in Petito’s death. But a court in Wyoming issued an arrest warrant for him in late September, accusing him of engaging in the unauthorized use of a debit card to make unauthorized withdrawals of more than $1,000 between August 30th and September 1st.
