Two snowmobilers from Minnesota were caught and killed in an avalanche on Scotch Bonnet Mountain north of Cooke City, Montana Monday. According to a report from Gallatin National Forest Avalanche Center, four riders were on the slope at the time of the avalanche.
One of the men got stuck on a southeast facing slope and another man was trying to help dig him out when the avalanche occurred, burying the two riders. Two other snowmobilers were able to escape. All members of the group of eight had rescue equipment.
The report says the avalanche broke 5’ deep and approximately 300’ wide on a southeast-facing slope. Members of Park County Sheriff Search and Rescue arrived to assist with rescue and recovery efforts. The names of the victims were not immediately released.
