Beware ‘porch-pirates’

They don’t sail the high seas or display the Jolly Roger, but so-called porch pirates are a real threat to your Christmas booty. Online shopping or home delivery is increasingly popular each holiday, making for easy pickings for porch pirates.

During the holidays, thieves will cruise around neighborhoods in search of boxes left at front doors—and steal them. The national cyber security company, Lookout suggests a few ways to protect yourself.

When ordering, only use unique & strong passwords. Immediately update any old passwords that have been compromised online. Enable two-factor authentication. Get a tracking number from the merchant. Then, retrieve your package as soon as possible after delivery, and if you can’t pick it up promptly, have a trusted person get it. If the packages have not arrived in a timely manner, contact the sender or check the tracking number. Provide insurance for the packages you send. Lookout’s team of experts have found numerous examples of bad actors posing as popular shipping services to send fake confirmation SMS’s.

Closer to home, if you see someone lurking around the neighborhood, contact the police or sheriff’s department to report it.
