Forest has strategy on wildfires

The US Forest Service this week announced a 10-year strategy to address what they are terming the current wildfire crisis throughout the nation.  According to a report in Wildfire Today, the strategy combines the recent $2.4-billion investment funded by congress with years of research and planning into a plan that will be executed over the next decade.

The effort will involve not only the Forest Service, but the department of Interior, Native American tribes, states, local communities, and private landowners as well.

Among the areas addressed in the plan are pre-fire planning and training, data management for fuels, planning and implementation of restoration projects, timber harvesting and thinning, urban interface defense grants, prescribed fires, fuel-breaks and innovative wood uses. The initiation of the plan was announced Tuesday.
