4th COVID shot authorized

Prevent Monkeypox

U.S. regulators have approved another COVID-19 booster for people 50 years old and older, in order to provide extra protection for the most vulnerable in case the coronavirus rebounds.

The Food and Drug Administration’s decision authorizes a fourth dose of the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines may be administered to that age group at least four months after their previous booster. The fourth dose had been approved only for people 12 and older who have severely weakened immune systems until now.

The latest expansion, regardless of people’s health, allows an extra shot to millions more Americans. How quickly people should avail themselves of the booster shots has not yet been determined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. There’s limited evidence to tell how much benefit another booster could offer right now.
