The Beartooth Highway east of the Yellowstone National Park’s Northeast Entrance between Red Lodge, and Cooke City, Montana, finally reopened yesterday after a late-season storm over the Memorial Day weekend forced its closure.
Earlier this week, crews were still making their ways through six-foot drifts at the summit. Montana highway officials point out that temporary road closures due to winter weather can occur any time on the highway given its high elevation.
Despite the reopening of the road, closures will be in effect from 7:00 pm until to 7:00 am Monday through Thursday. However, there will be no closures Friday through Sunday.
The closure is from Pilot Index Overlook east to Beartooth Lake Campground, and will be in effect through mid-October and is necessary to allow for ongoing highway construction.
