Has famous Yellowstone geyser shut down?

Yellowstone geyser

Steamboat Geyser, which surprised everyone a few years ago by bubbling to life and making frequent eruptions after long periods of dormancy, has continued to erupt this year, but on an irregular basis.

According to records posted by “Geysertimes,” the thermal feature which is considered the tallest geyser in the world when it does erupt, posted eight events so far this year. There were two in June including the most recent eruption on June 20, two in May, but none in April. Steamboat erupted 20 times in 2021 and spouted off 48 times in 2020 but has been gradually languishing again and its activity continues to be a mystery.

Mike Poland, Scientist in Charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory says it doesn’t appear that there is a major eruption imminent right now, and observers are just waiting to see what happens this month.
