A Skier Also Triggers Avalanche in Hoback Canyon
Rescue workers are returning to the scene of an avalanche northeast of Sheep Creek in the Palisades area where a snowmobiler was buried yesterday and could not be located in the debris. The report of the avalanche fatality came in from a snowmobile rider who advised authorities at about 5:40 pm yesterday that a man from their party had been missing for approximately an hour before they could get to a point with cell service and call for help. Deputies, Forest Service Law Enforcement and Air Idaho Rescue responded to the area and located the remaining riders in the party. Rescue personnel located the approximate location of the victim but due to weather and terrain conditions were unable to continue with a recovery until today. The victim’s name and information are being withheld until after family is notified and recovery efforts are finished. Meanwhile, a skier in Hoback Canyon, unintentionally triggered a small slab avalanche and was carried several hundred feet, but escaped with his life.
