Idaho to Enforce Distracted Driving Law

April 2, 2024 by Scott Anderson

April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a critical time for drivers across Wyoming, Idaho, and the nation to refocus on the road and the importance of driving without distractions. The Idaho State Police, alongside the Idaho Office of Highway Safety (OHS) and the Idaho Transportation Department (ITD), is stepping up efforts to curb distracted driving behaviors that endanger everyone on the road.

Idaho law mandates hands-free use of electronic devices while driving, underscoring the state’s commitment to reducing accidents and fatalities linked to distracted driving. The types of distractions drivers face are varied, ranging from the temptation to adjust the GPS or radio, applying makeup, to the consumption of food and beverages behind the wheel. Yet, it is the use of cell phones for texting, talking, and engaging with social media that stands out as the leading cause of distraction. The act of texting while driving, in particular, combines visual, manual, and cognitive distractions, making it especially hazardous.

Lieutenant Colonel Sheldon Kelley of the ISP emphasizes the dangers of distracted driving, noting that it poses a threat to all road users. The message is clear: the responsibility for safe driving rests on the shoulders of every driver. He urges drivers to commit to responsible driving habits and to encourage friends and family to do the same.

In 2022, Idaho saw over 4,750 distracted driving-related crashes, resulting in 34 fatalities. These numbers are a stark reminder of the consequences of not paying full attention to the driving task. The ISP, OHS, and ITD offer simple but effective strategies for staying focused on the road, including pulling over to text, designating a passenger as the “texter,” and avoiding the use of apps while driving.

As part of Distracted Driving Awareness Month, Idahoans can expect to see increased law enforcement efforts on the roads, particularly between April 4 and 8. This heightened presence is not just about enforcing laws but is also part of a broader campaign to educate the public about the serious risks of distracted driving.

Distracted Driving Awareness Month serves as a timely reminder of the vital importance of keeping our attention firmly on the road. By taking collective action and adhering to safety guidelines, we can significantly reduce the number of distracted driving incidents and make Idaho’s roads safer for everyone.
