Last week’s snowstorms caused more than their share of headaches for area residents, but in the long term, they brought the region much-needed moisture. According to the Natural Resource Conservation Service, the storms have elevated the snow accumulation in the Snake River Basin to 99% of the average precipitation for this time of year. Moisture content of this accumulation is 103% of normal. To the north, the Madison/Gallatin River Basin now measures 93% of the normal precipitation with that accumulation containing 105% of the seasonal moisture content. The Wind River Basin has measured 89% of its seasonal accumulation of snow while the moisture content there is 105% of the norm. The area’s ski resorts are pleased with the recent accumulations which have elevated the snow received at Jackson Hole Mountain Resort to 384 inches, second only to Squaw Valley, California in the Sierras. Grand Targhee Resort boasts having received 349 inches this winter. Snow King Mountain has received 138 inches at its summit.
