The Alpine Fire Department was dispatched to a report of a house with the roof on fire Wednesday morning. According to Alpine Fire Chief, Mike Vogt, firemen found smoke coming from around the outside of the chimney when they arrived.
The firefighters found fire inside the ceiling above the wood stove, cut open the ceiling and extinguished the fire before it could spread. Here in Teton County, Fire Marshal Kathy Clay reminds homeowners that with the colder weather, more people are stoking up wood fires, and chimneys need to be given the proper attention if they haven’t been already.
“If you do burn wood, remember to get that chimney cleaned to get the creosote out of the top of the chimney where it cools off and gets around that chimney pipe and can cause a significant chimney fire which can extend into the wood construction of your home.”
