That unique sound of the sage grouse during their spring mating season is being heard in Jackson Hole. During this time, males use their tail feathers and expandable air sacs under their throats to compete with other males for optimum position on the lek and the attention of females.
In Grand Teton National Park, the public is invited to join park rangers on early-morning tours to observe strutting sage grouse, as they perform their annual mating dance on an historic lek near Mormon Row.
Ranger-led grouse strut programs are being offered Saturday, April 23rd, Sunday, April 24th, and again Saturday, April 30th. Advanced reservations are required. Programs will begin at the Craig Thomas Discovery and Visitor Center at 5:30 am. Those interested in a tour may reserve a spot by calling 307-739-3399.
