Teton County is replacing a 2000 Dodge Durango that has reached the end of its useful life. Despite two previous unsuccessful attempts to procure a hybrid or plug-in hybrid SUV due to vehicle availability and pricing issues, they have approved the purchase of a 2023 AWD Ford Escape Hybrid. However, this vehicle is no longer in production, leading them to consider other options.

In an effort to align with sustainability goals and considering their current EV charging infrastructure, Teton County is now looking to purchase a 2023 Toyota RAV4 Prime plug-in hybrid. This choice offers up to 42 miles in all-electric mode, followed by traditional hybrid functionality for longer distances. They believe this will help reduce fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions substantially.
The operational cost for the RAV4 Prime is significantly lower, both in terms of gasoline and electric charging. Over ten years and 50,000 miles, they anticipate saving a maximum of $13,500 in fuel costs by switching to this vehicle. Additionally, the RAV4 Prime has lower greenhouse gas emissions compared to the Dodge Durango.

The purchase of the RAV4 Prime for $47,040.70 will be funded from the FY24 Facilities Capital Fund, and the old Dodge Durango will be salvaged. Staff recommends the Board of County Commissioners approve this contract for the purchase of the RAV4 Prime from Pueblo Toyota in Colorado.
