Alert: Severe Weather on the Horizon
After a quiet start to winter in the Tetons it seems like snowy weather has returned with some oomph. The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch, effective from Tuesday evening until Thursday afternoon, January 18th, for several areas:
- Yellowstone National Park: Anticipate 9 to 18 inches in the southwestern mountains, and 6 to 12 inches elsewhere. Winds may gust up to 40 mph.
- Teton and Gros Ventre Mountains: Expected snowfall ranges from 12 to 24 inches with wind gusts as high as 50 mph.
- Jackson Hole and Star Valley: Forecasts predict 8 to 14 inches of snow, with winds gusting up to 35 mph.
The Impact on Travel
Heavy snowfall and strong winds are expected to make travel conditions very difficult, with reduced visibility and potential road closures. It’s essential to stay updated with the latest weather reports and plan accordingly.
Winter Driving Safety Tips
- Prepare Your Vehicle: Ensure your car is winter-ready. Check your battery, tires, lights, and wipers. Keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent fuel line freeze-up.
- Emergency Kit: Carry an emergency kit in your car that includes blankets, a flashlight, a first-aid kit, water, snacks, and necessary medications.
- Stay Informed: Before you hit the road, check the latest weather updates and road conditions. Consider postponing travel if the forecast looks severe.
- Drive Slowly: Reduce speed and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles. Remember, it takes longer to stop on snowy or icy roads.
- Beware of Ice: Be especially cautious on bridges, overpasses, and infrequently traveled roads, which can freeze first.
- Do Not Use Cruise Control: When driving on any slippery surface, avoid using cruise control.
- Know Your Brakes: Whether you have antilock brakes or not, the best way to stop is threshold braking. Keep the heel of your foot on the floor and use the ball of your foot to apply firm, steady pressure on the brake pedal.
- Stay Visible: Keep your lights on to increase your visibility to other motorists.
- If You Get Stuck: Stay with your vehicle, as it provides temporary shelter and makes it easier for rescuers to locate you.
- Be Patient: Remember that everyone is trying to get to their destination safely.
Stay Safe and Stay Warm
By staying informed and prepared, you can navigate these winter storms safely. Keep an eye on the forecast, plan your travel carefully, and always prioritize safety on the roads. Stay warm and safe, Wyoming!
