Modern technology allowed a racist rant to take place at the Jackson Town Council meeting last night.
While discussing the pros and cons of adding a zoning change for a fourth story to certain areas of town, including the Virginian RV Park where he town and county intend to build an affordable housing project, Mayor Hailey Morton Levinson was taking public comment. She first turned to those who were present in the council chambers. Then, as has been an option since the covid pandemic, she switched to take comment from those who signed up on the Zoom remote streaming platform.
That’s when the trouble began. In modern parlance it is called ‘zoombombing’
A person who identified as Andrea Weaver began to give comments in opposition to the increase in density that was being discussed. Weaver decried the idea of forcing people to live in cramped conditions and said planners should look to nature for better solutions.
“I actually oppose this entire development plan because humans aren’t meant to be packed into a Cam like sardines if we look into the natural world let’s go a little farther from our human ancestors a bear needs about 18 to 24 square miles for its own territory and that’s one bear with its partner and its Cubs and if we go into wolves they need about 1400.” Weaver said.
Then after speaking for several minutes, Weaver launched into a stream of racial invective.
“I’m just thinking about the actual citizens in the area you guys really want that many more nxxxxxs packed right into the area creating more crime raping everyone rapping in the stores everyone…” Weaver ranted.
Mayor Morton Levinson attempted to intervene saying that the council meeting was meant to be a safe space, but the speaker continued.
“What about a safe space for European descendant Americans white European Americans the most important race on earth we built this nation these nxxxxxs built nothing mocking nixxxr nixxxr nixxxr …” Weaver said before the audio was cut.
Zoom raiders, as people like Weaver are known, use obscene images, language, or racial slurs disrupt the video platform.
The mayor eventually recessed the meeting.
When they reconvened, the council voted to move the increased density measure forward by a vote of 3-2.
