Oil & Gas Leases Officially Retired

It’s official now:  the oil and gas leases in the Upper Hoback Basin have been permanently retired with the completion of the purchase of those leases from Plains Exploration and Production Company earlier this year.  Working with a broad coalition of conservation organizations, concerned citizens, and more than 1,000 donors, The Trust for Public Land announced January second that it had raised the $8.75 million needed to buy all the leases.  While 47,780 of the 58,000 acres involved are on the Forest and subject to protection under the Wyoming Range Legacy Act, the organization will continue to hold title to the remaining off-forest leases while working with state and federal officials on a long-term protection plan.
