Montana Department of Transportation crews begin clearing the Montana section of the Beartooth Highway today with hopes of having it open by the Memorial Day Weekend. 11.4 miles of snow packed Highway 212 closes each winter because of excessive snow and adverse winter conditions there. Snow levels vary and drifts can be as high as 26 feet in the higher elevations. The Montana crews are responsible for clearing the highway to the Montana/Wyoming border. That’s where Yellowstone National Park takes over maintenance responsibility – clearing the road from there into the national park. This year, that effort will be two weeks later than normal due to the sequestration measures. Spokesman Dan Hottle says park crews have targeted June 14th to have the work completed.
