A Casper funeral home has announced they will be laying to rest a 101-year-old Marine Corps veteran who has no known living relatives to be on hand for his interment. Corporal Remigio “Ray” Barela is to be buried Friday morning in the Oregon Trail Veterans’ Cemetery. Barela served in the Marines from 1942 until 1946, and although his deployment is uncertain, it is believed he fought in the Pacific Theater. Before his death, Barela told friends that he had “outlived everybody.” Captain Mike Byers of the Wyoming Patriot Guard says Barela’s funeral will likely include full military honors, and he says he hopes Barela will be honored by the presence of other Wyoming veterans and residents at the ceremony. Byers says, “With no family, with no one to mourn for him, I just think that every veteran deserves to be remembered.” The Friday burial takes place at 10:00 am.
