Bridger Teton National Forest reports that despite the volatility of this year’s fire season, campfires in the area continue to be abandoned or otherwise unattended. As of Monday, 126 fires had been abandoned so far this year.
Forest users are admonished that if they do elect to have a campfire or warming fire, it must be completely cold before you leave the area. If there is any heat, it is considered an abandoned fire punishable by a $5000 fine, 6-months in jail, or BOTH.
Use gallons of water to put your campfire out before leaving it. Some of the abandoned campfires that were found had already begun to spread from their fire rings. Currently, the fire danger in the region is considered very high.
