Airport Looks For Bear Spray Solutions

For years, it has been a frustration for those flying out of Jackson Hole to have to surrender their pricey cannisters of bear-spray – many brand new – and not transport them even in their checked bags. FAA regulations do not allow transportation of more than 4 ounces of pepper spray packed in checked luggage, and a typical can of bear spray exceeds that. For that reason, Jackson Hole Airport Director Jim Elwood says collection points are established at the terminal where the cannisters can be deposited and then sent to a company that specializes in recycling them in an environmentally responsible manner. Now, he says, the airport is seeking a vendor to provide the alternative of bear spray rental at the airport.
Elwood points out that given the airport’s setting inside the national park, there is a concern to provide an environmentally sensitive option for visitors.
Proposal information for those interested in providing the service may be obtained at the office of the Executive Director of the Jackson Hole Airport.
