Astoria Project Raises Needed Cash

Plans to restore Astoria Hot Springs into a new riverfront park centered on the hot springs are moving forward after the deadline to raise one million dollars needed to break ground this spring was met in the 11thhour. Astoria Park Conservancy Director Paige Byron Curry says that thanks to the help of over 100 donors, the non-profit exceeded its goal to raise ½-million dollars toward a match grant by New Year’s Eve. Curry calls it “an amazing effort” by the volunteers and supporters who made it happen. Quoting Paige, “Our progress in this challenge has put us within reach of our overall $6 million campaign goal, with only 7% left to raise. I’m hopeful that we will be able to secure the remaining funding needed this January.” Paige says the next steps include planning for a Spring groundbreaking, completing the permitting, and finalizing a contract with Two Oceans builders for the first phase of construction. Located on the banks of the Snake River about 15 minutes south of Jackson,Astoria Hot Springs had been a scenic, a locally cherished family-oriented RV and tent campground with mineral hot spring pools. The facility was closed to the public in 1999 when it and the surrounding property were sold to a New York real estate developer.
