Avalanche Close Call

The Bridger Teton National Forest Avalanche Center is reporting a near miss for a skier occurred Monday involving the new wind loaded snow on the South Teton in terrain above the 10,500-foot elevation.
Reports indicate a second person in a second party on a slope triggered a slab that caught a person in front of them. That person was able to get out of the slide and avoid injury in the high consequence terrain.
The center is cautioning that the snowpack has several weak layers including a widespread weakness covered on December 11th and a less widespread but significant surface hoar layer buried on January 12th.
Earlier this week, a storm brought one to three inches to the 9000-foot elevation of the Tetons and provided a wind slab problem. While the avalanche danger today is considered moderate in the Teton and Togwotee areas, caution in the back country is still urged.
