While Teton County, Wyoming has not experienced any avalanche incidents as yet this winter, the danger is certainly there now and it may be only a matter of time. The Bridger-Teton Avalanche Center is advising dangerous avalanche conditions exist at the upper elevations, where the weight of a single person could trigger a high consequence slab avalanche with depths up to 5 feet.
Over the weekend, guides in the Snake River range observed evidence of widespread avalanche activity from the most recent loading event and triggered, with explosives, large to very large avalanches. At the mid-elevations, it is also possible to trigger large avalanches on these buried weak layers. The center also cautions such events may come without warning. As such, the center urges careful evaluation of the snowpack to determine the presence of the potential for avalanche.
