A snowboarder was rescued by an interagency team in Grand Teton National Park after he was caught and carried by an avalanche and sustained injuries. According to the Bridger Teton National Forest Avalanche Center, two unidentified snowboarders entered Granite Canyon from the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort during a period of high avalanche danger. After traversing to the Mile Long Couloir one of them was caught in an avalanche with a two foot crown and carried to the flats near the creek. Inter-agency rescue efforts including GTNP rangers removed him from the site using the short-haul helicopter technique when skies, clouds and snowfall allowed. Interagency officials point out that rescue in the backcountry is not guaranteed and when it comes to making touring decisions in avalanche terrain, particularly during high danger periods. Fortunately, this rescue was successful and the person caught in the slide survived his long ride. A second person was evacuated from the Four Pines area Tuesday evening due to inuries he sustained during his outing.
