Tip Top Search and Rescue in Sublette County has unveiled a public avalanche beacon training park at the Horse Creek Parking Lot. This training facility is free to the public and open as long as there is snow on the ground.
This is an area that has buried units that simulate buried avalanche beacons.
Once the control unit is turned on, a participant turns his or her avalanche transceiver to “SEARCH” mode and can search for single or multi-buried “victims.” Once the “searcher” has pinpointed the location, the probing begins. The rescuer then uses a probe to make a “strike”. If the area is successfully probed, the alarm will sound at the control unit and the buried unit is reset. The rescuer will either return to the start or search for the next closest signal.
No shovels are to be used to dig up the buried unit as it will take all the fun away from the next participant. The training park was made possible with public donations and with the support of Back Country Access and the Bridger-Teton National Forest.
