The Beartooth Highway is now closed for the season. Winter has returned with a vengeance to the Beartooth Highway, leading to the famed road closing due to blowing snow and drifting conditions. Through the winter, snow levels vary and drifts can be as high as 26 feet in the higher elevations. The Montana Department of Transportation is responsible for the highway to the Montana/Wyoming border, where the Yellowstone National Park takes over maintenance responsibilities through Wyoming, back into Montana and from there, into Yellowstone Park. The road, which closes each winter typically reopens by the Friday of Memorial Day weekend. Additionally, due to winter weather conditions, all roads in Yellowstone National Park are closed due to winter conditions except for Gardiner to Mammoth and Cooke City to Tower.
