This time of year, safety concerns involving snow accumulations around the home are not limited to the ground. Each year, cases of people being injured by snow sliding off of the roof are reported around the country – sometimes, says Fire Marshal Kathy Clay involving serious consequences. She points in particular where children have been playing outside when snow and ice as cascaded onto them and caused significant harm. But Clay says it is not only the injuries to someone below a roof slide-off that are of concern. Clay cautions, “When that snowflow comes off the roof, it could tear off or disrupt an important ventilation pipeand cause carbon monoxide to seep back into the house.” She goes on to advise, “It’s really important to watch those vent pipes in your house and make sure they’re not disturbed or destroyed with that snow-slide off the roof.” Clay also warns that heavy snow or ice hitting a gas regulator on the side of a house can lead to a dangerous gas leak or malfunction of the regulator. She urges homeowners to keep the gas meter unburied to be able to monitor its welfare.
